Quick start

We would recommend that you at least read through this Quick Start section of the Help, to get a general overview of how the Mirror Study Bible app works! (There are also two introductory YouTube videos to get you started at: Getting Started. Furthermore, do take note that you can also read this help in your computer browser at: https://mirror.bible/help/en.help.html)

Main Screen


Main Menu ☰

This menu easily give you access to the core functionality.


Context Menu:

This menu gives you access to functionality in the context of what Bible text is selected or what you see. You can open it with the ⠇ button at the top-right of the screen (in most screens that show you Bible text). Some functionality is only available when some text is selected. If the icon is greyed-out, it is not available. (See Selecting in the Main Screen section above.)

Following are all the functions of the Context Menu, starting top-left through the bottom most item:


Share screen:

The Share functionality allows you to share the selected Verse(s), Verse Note(s), and/or paragraphs in various ways. You access it from the Context Menu, after selecting any combination of words, verses, verse notes, or commentary paragraphs.
First select what you want to share (with the drop-down menu at the top): Text, Hyperlink or QR-code. (To the right of that, you will find a ⠇menu wherein you can set a few options regarding what should be included or not.)
If you selected Text, you will have the option to select which the format to share (in the next drop-down) - at this stage, only Plain text, WhatsApp, and HTML formatting is supported. If you want to share to e.g. Facebook, select the Plain Text format. (Some Facebook posts and Facebook Messenger, can also use the WhatsApp format.) Using the HTML format, you can save a file that can then be viewed/displayed/printed in e.g. a web browser.
While you are selecting what to share, and the format (and/or options), there is a preview window in the middle of the Share screen, to show approximately what the shared text will look like.
At the bottom of the screen, you can select if "How to share:" - should be Shared directly with another app on your device, Copied to the clipboard (for pasting into another app like WhatsApp or some editor, or even e.g. sending to you PC clipboard via PhoneLink or similar), or you can choose to Save to file.

Search

In the Main Screen (or any of the Search Screens, or the Context Menu) you can open the Main Menu (with the the 3-line ☰ icon), and select the type of search: Bible Text (default), Bookmark, User Notes, Color, or Lexicon search. Each of these search types are described below. (There is also a Dice function, in the Main Menu, to go to a random verse.)

Bible Text search

Type the word(s) or part of word(s) to be searched, into the Search Text Field, just to the right of the Main Menu icon.
The filter button (funnel icon to the right of the search text field) shows the Search Menu - see Search filter options below for details on how to fine-tune how what you typed should be searched for in the bible text. If the filter is changed from the default, the icon will be red. (The default search filter is: Tolerant, Parts of words, All words. You can long-press the filter icon to reset to default.) After setting the desired options, close the Search menu with the "x" or by tapping outside it.

As you type the search text, the results will start to be populated in the area beneath it, with the occurrence closest to where you were reading at the top of the list - See Search Results chapter below. If you had one or more words selected before opening the Search mode, those words will be used as the search text.

There is an “x” button at the right, which clears the Search Field (and exits Search mode if tapped again).
When you start typing a search word, an Auto-complete box will appear with some predicted suggestions for search words. You can select one of them, or just continue typing. (If you do not want the Auto-complete box there, you can close it with the "x"on the left and then continue with your search.)

To quickly search for a specific Bible place or even range of verses, you just type it in the Search Text Field, e.g. "joh 14:20" or "james1:22-25" or "Acts17", etc. (PS. When you jump to a range of verses like this, it will be selected as well, to show you the range of verses or to be ready for you to mark or share. Remember to unselect it if you do not want to do something with all of it. The selected verses will be unselected automatically if you start reading any other chapter)

Search filter options

The options are grouped into 3 sections, each with a radio button to select one of the options in that group.

How strict to be with the search text - to ignore case, punctuation, other text markings and some plurals, or not:

How much of the search text is to be found:
How many of the search terms or parts should be found, and if the order matters:

Search settings:

Some optional settings are available to refine/broaden the scope of the search. Here you can set the extent/range of the "All words" search (from the 1 verse default, up to the whole chapter). You can also select if the search should include Francois' verse and chapter commentary, and more. (Remember to reset these settings after using them, to not end up getting incomplete or excessive results in subsequent searches.) After adjusting the settings as you like, use the 🡠 back-arrow at the top-left of the screen to return to the search. Some of these settings are available for the other search types as well.
PS. Lastly you can deactivate the Auto-type search suggestions in the search text field, if you don't want to use it.

Search Results

A list of found results will be shown, with the place/address where it is found and the found text highlighted in yellow. The search, and results, will start from where you were reading in the Bible. Up to 30 entries are shown as a "page" of results. If there are more pages of results before or after that place, the yellow “<” and “>” buttons may be used to get to the other pages of results.
Tap the ➞ arrow after the Verse (or Verse Note) text to go to it. After going to a result, search-results mode will be active, giving you yellow floating buttons at the bottom of the text, to quickly go to the next/previous search result, back to the search results screen, or exit search-results mode.
At the top of the Search Results, there is a Occurrence Diagram (histogram), showing the occurrences within each section of the Bible. It is updated dynamically as you type the search text. You can expand (to show a more detailed breakdown) or condense by tapping on the "v" arrow to the right of it (or click the “Total verses: ” above it). If you tap any of the bible-sections or Books in it, the Search Results list will be shown starting from that book/section onward. The sections/books that are in the current result page are marked in yellow.

PS. many of the Context Menu items are available in the search results entries. Therefore,if you select one of the verses/notes or some of the text, you can use the Context Menu (⠇) to quickly e.g. bookmark, color mark or share any of your results directly from there.

Bookmark search

Show results of all Verses, Verse Notes, commentary paragraphs that were bookmarked.
There are Filter Options for Bookmarks (filter/funnel button), which allow you to change the sort order and (in Settings) also allow you to choose if bookmarks in the Verse Notes and Commentary Chapters should be included in the search or not.

If you selected Biblical sort order, the Occurrence Diagram as explained in the previous paragraph, is also available.

In the bookmark search results, you can also use the trashcan icon at the bottom right a a result, to delete/remove that bookmark.

User Notes search

Search for text in User Notes. If no search text is entered, it will show all the verses (or verse notes) that have User Notes in the Search Results. (See the Search Results section above for detailed functionality.) Furthermore, for each results found, you will see the verse, verse note, or paragraph for which it was made, and the note below it, as well as the date and time when it was created. There is also a pen icon to the right of each note, to access the User Notes edit screen (as explained in the Main Screen/Context Menu section above).
There are Filter Options for User Notes (the filter/funnel button), which allow you to change the sort order and (in Settings) also allow you to choose if User Notes in Verse Notes and Commentary chapters should be included in the search or not.
If you selected Biblical sort order, the Occurrence Diagram as explained in the previous paragraph, is also available.

Color search

Allows you to search for text marked in a particular color (or Any color). Tap the color bar (or drop-down arrow) to open the selection of colors that can be searched for. The number of times each color has been used will also be displayed in each color bar.
There is a Search Settings menu screen, which you can access from the filter/funnel button, allowing you to choose if Color markings in Verse Notes and Commentary chapters should be included in the results or not.

The Occurrence Diagram as explained in the previous paragraph, is also available.


Settings Sub-Menu:

To get to the settings, open the Settings menu item in the Main Menu. This allows you to change many of the app settings. The following can be accessed from there:

General Settings

User Data

The first thing to set here (if it is not already correct), is the account the Mirror app should use. You can change the account with the Choose account button.
All settings, color markings (highlights), bookmarks, user notes, etc. can be synchronized between devices. For this to work in the background, you can activate Synchronize settings with the back-end server. Using the Sync now function, will push all the current data to the server.
You can also manually Export the data to a file. Copy the file created in this way to another device or to your cloud, and then Import it in the app there. You can also Import all the User Data, which you (or someone else) has exported to your devises. As soon as the Web version is available, it can be imported there as well.

NB. The Import will overwrite all current User Data.


Display Settings

Color Settings:

This section allows you to define highlight colors and see stats on how each is used. The first color-bar allows you to select which highlight color is being viewed/edited. The usage stats for the selected color will be displayed at the bottom of the Color Settings screen. (You can also clear all the usages of this color with the trashcan button at the bottom-right.)
Each highlight “color” has 4 color components. Selected the component you want to review/edit in the second drop-down (just under where you selected the color). The components are: Background, Font, Jesus words, and Numbers. After selecting, the color can be adjusted by moving the small circle in the color-wheel to adjust the hue, and the saturation-slider just below it (or Grey and White buttons), to achieve the desired color. As you change the color, the color of the two color bars at the top will be updated to show you the resulting color as you edit it.
The color can also be given a Name (If no name is entered in the text field, the color-number will be used).
The context menu (top-right ⠇button) here gives you access to the following additional functionality:


Bible Menu

The Bible Menu can be opened by tapping on the translation (or the down arrow) at the top right of the app. This allows you to change the active Bible translation, add more translations, activate Compare translations mode, and show Bible statistics.

There is a “...” menu item which allows the selection (and loading) of more translations, and allows you to start Compare Translations mode.

This mode allows you to open a secondary translation in tandem with the active one (selected from your available translations). After activating this feature, the newly selected translation will be shown on the left side, and the menu will extend to show Exchange sides and Close right side. You will also notice other translation name appear in the top-left of the Main Screen – this allows control of the translation displayed on the left side. In compare mode all functionality will work on both translations (even Search - e.g. doing a "Part of verse" search for "Christ in you", while comparing with KJV, will additionally give you Col.1:27; which is translated slightly different in the Mirror Bible). Select Exchange Sides to swap which is displayed where. Select Close left side (in the left Bible menu), or  Close right side (in the right Bible menu) to stop comparison mode. (When in compare mode, there is a similar Bible icon top-left when in comparison mode, to control the left translation)

When selecting/adding more translations (with the "... More" menu option), you will be taken to the Select A Translation screen. Here you can choose from the available Bibles. This is also where you will find the Mirror bible in other languages as they become available. You can also select "Get more bibles with a 1 click download". After downloading the bible you want access to, you can go back to the "Saved on device" section, by selecting it in the drop-down menu at the top in the center of the screen. Then select the bible from the list (which will now contain the newly downloaded bible too). Currently there are only a few translations available for 1-click download. More will follow in future.

About this app

If you scroll down in the About section, you will find the Version Info. Use this information when reporting bugs.
Below the version info, you will see a section showing new/changed functionality for the last few versions.

Strong numbers 

(Where available in the translation)
Numbering of all Hebrew and ancient Greek root words of the original texts, according to James Strong (1822-1894). For each root word there is further information.
If two translations with Strong numbers are used in comparison mode, all tapped words with the same spelling as well as those with the same Strong number are marked, which can be very useful when reading and for further checking.
The Strong's numbers are also used for color marking.
